The key to avoiding diseases and other medical conditions is good healthful habits like eating nutritious foods and exercising regularly. But if you suspect you have a medical issue that needs to be addressed, or have been diagnosed by a doctor, there are lots of great resources online to help you identify issues, treat symptoms, and explore solutions. Remember that, information online can be useful, but it is always important to seek advice from a medical professional before treating a problem or making any big changes to your health routine.
Mental Health
Mental health often gets thought of and discussed differently than other medical conditions, but it can be just as big of a medical problem if you are feeling stressed, depressed, or confused. You should seek the help of a mental health professional if you feel like you are having any of these symptoms.
Common and Serious Medical Diseases and Conditions
There are literally hundreds of different medical conditions that we may suffer from, but there are a smaller number that are very serious and all too common. Much of the preventive medical advice we see is aimed at avoiding these serious issues:
- Cancer – There are many forms of cancer and it can affect many parts of your body. The cause of some cancers is unknown, while others like lung, liver, and gum cancer are typically the result of bad habits such as tobacco use and alcohol abuse. While some cancers can spring up relatively unannounced, others can be treated if caught in time, and are relatively easy to scan for, including breast cancer, prostate cancer, and colon cancer. Doctors recommend scanning for these types of cancers around the time you hit middle age.
- Heart Disease – There are a variety of diseases and conditions related to the heart and blood vessels, including stroke and heart attacks, as well as coronary heart disease. These are all very serious, but can most often be avoided with good diet and exercise habits, and avoiding things like smoking.
- Diabetes – There are two main types of Diabetes, type 1 (which usually starts during childhood) and type 2 (which is most frequently found in adults who are overweight and have poor diet and exercise habits. Both types can be managed through better diet and exercise routines and in some cases medication to regulate your blood sugar levels. If untreated Diabetes can be very serious and lead to seizures, amputations of limbs, and death.
